The number of show programs on Azerbaijani TV channels is suspended, Chairman of National Television and Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramli said.
"One feels that TV channels became more careful and attentive to their work. According to our observations, the growth of the number of show-programs is suspended. TV channels prefer other programs," Maharramli told Trend on Thursday.
Head of the presidential administration Ramiz Mehdiyev attracted attention to shortages in activity of TV and radio channels in the article published in 'Azerbaijan' newspaper under the title 'Ether time of Azerbaijan: problems and tasks' on October 2.
Mehdiyev said that increasing number of low-quality entertaining show programs at TV channels is one of mainly discussed problems disturbing public.
Head of the administration said that discussion of the problem by experts demonstrated that business-interests of TV and radio channels, adding programs alien to our mentality to fill up ether, lack of professional staff and other problems are one of major grounds of similar serous shortages.
"The Council has set a requirement for TV channels to increase the number of educational programs, Maharramli said.
"The Council will be insistent in its demand. Recently, TV channels began to act with greater caution while selecting topics and speakers. But in the short term it is impossible to achieve a serious breakthrough in the policy of television and radio. There is much to be done in this direction," Maharramli said.
Maharramli said that programs broadcasted on TV channels must comply with current requirements and meet the needs of the audience.
"Programs broadcasted on foreign TV channels must not be duplicated on local TV channels. Recently, the Council has been working with TV channels on this issue. We explain that it would be better to begin production of local programs. At the same time, artificiality, ordinariness, levity must be removed from programs. One wishes that people involved in the intellectual field, in production, rather than people from the service sector to be promoted on TV channels of the country. But, unfortunately, representatives of show business, including singers are more promoted now. I think this is wrong, " Maharramli said.
Chairman of the Council focused on the problem of television and radio presenters.
"TV channels have great responsibility while choosing presenters. Many factors depend on presenters. If they are familiar with history, literature, geography of Azerbaijan, the national moral values, I think that the number of viewers and listeners of channels who will get benefit from this will increase. But, unfortunately, sometimes while choosing presenters in the air great attention is paid to their appearance. This is wrong. In our view, intellectual level and world view should be taken as a basis," Maharramli said.
There are 8 Republican, 14 regional, 13 cable TV channels in Azerbaijan.
