Press Council chairman: Azerbaijan's media outlets must register again

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 18 / Trend A.Huseynbala /

Azerbaijani media outlets must register again, Azerbaijani Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov said.

"Media outlets should be re-registered at the Justice Ministry for even more effective fight with racketeering newspapers," he said.

About 4,000 media outlets are registered in Azerbaijan. Currently, only 600 of them operate.

Nearly 400 newspapers and magazines are published and more than 20 television channels operate. There are about 50 electronic media outlets, 20 news agencies and the rest are Internet resources.

He said that although 2009 was declared the year against racketeering newspapers, the problem is not completely resolved.

"Interest in racketeering journalists exists today. Unfortunately, a number of newspapers, announced racketeering, whose names are included in the 'black list,'" he said.

"Assessing the social order, the council continues the consistent and principled struggle against racketeering publications. On the basis of specific complaints and requests, newspapers and magazines systematically and grossly violating the requirements of the rules of professional conduct for journalists and the country's law were included in the list. Now, their number is 94," the document says.

"The press finds it unacceptable that some editions have hidden masterminds, which fund these publications and execute their treacherous orders," the document says.

Amashov reminded that the fight against racketeering media will continue in 2010, which will celebrate the 135 anniversary of the press.
