"Nur" Children and Youth Public Union of Azerbaijan receives San Marino-UNICEF Award.

San Marino-Alexander Bodini Foundation Children's Awards recipients this year include an NGO from Azerbaijan - "Nur", Children and Youth Public Union. Two other finalists are "The Network of children and youth communicators" from Honduras and Nairobi Youth Counselling Centre from Kenya, UNICEF Baku Office told Trend .

"NUR" is a social union created in 1999 by the children's own initiative on the bases of the common interest, volunteer works and the principle of equal rights of its members. It organizes its activities on the basis of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The 2009 San Marino-Alexander Bodini Foundation Children's Awards will comprise a grant of $20,000 for each finalist.  The awards will be presented at an event in New York City on February 25 in the presence of members of the Government of San Marino and the Executive Director of UNICEF. Ambassador Bodini will present an award for "Nur" to Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to UN Agshin Mehdiyev.

The three UNICEF offices from where the award recipient organizations are selected will also receive $10,000 each from the Alexander Bodini Charitable Foundation towards the promotion of children's participation and civic engagement.

The focus of the award is active youth participation in community-based programmes as a means to strengthen and protect children's rights. The award recognizes the positive contribution and dedication of children to promoting child rights. In providing these awards to the selected child-led organization, the Alexander Bodini Charitable Foundation seeks to promote them as role models for other children and young people around the world.

""Nur", like the other organizations being honoured this year, have focused their work on children and young people working to promote the rights of children, and this work sets an example for other NGOs," UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward said.

"We are so pleased this work in Azerbaijan has been recognized globally, and take it as great encouragement to keep moving forward," he added.
