Prosecutor demands 31 years imprisonment for group accused of arm smuggling

A prosecutor demanded punishment for group members accused of arm smuggling in Azerbaijan.

The Baku Heinous Crimes Court held a hearing on the criminal case of Siyavush Eyvazov, Gurbat Najafov, Ilham Rahimov and Elchin Alekberov, who are accused of smuggling arms.

The prosecutor demanded eight years imprisonment for Eyvazov, seven years imprisonment for Najafov and Rahimov, and nine years for Alekberov. 

According to the indictment, police stopped a vehicle driven by Intigam Valiyev Oct.13, 2008 on the Gazakh-Baku Highway. During the inspection, 157 smooth-bore hunting shotguns and air guns were found, as were 26 boxes of cartridges, 10 boxes of cartridge cases, three boxes of spare parts for hunting guns and 300 handcuffs.

It was revealed that an employee of the Baku office of the Oz Nuhoglu company in Istanbul, Siyavush Eyvazov, had entered into a criminal conspiracy with Gudrat Najafov, head of the Franki firm, which dealt with the sale of hunting rifles in Sumgayit, Agstafa region resident Ilham Rahimov, who previously worked at the Broker organization at the Qırmızı korpu (Red Bridge) border checkpoint, and Turkish citizen Haji Safar.

For this purpose, Safar importing the ammunition purchased from an unidentified source through the Turkish-Georgian border, and gave them to Eyvazov for delivery to Sumgayit.

Rahimov was detained Oct.13, 2008 while transporting ammunition through the Sınıq korpu (Broken Bridge) customs post.

They are charged with Article 206.1 (Smuggling) of the Azerbajani Criminal Code.
