Foreign students do not want to study at Baku State University (BSU) as refugees and IDPs also reside in the dormitories, Rector Abel Maharramov told journalists April 2.

The number of foreign students joining the university has dropped as a result, the rector said.

According to Maharramov, 99 percent of the dorm rooms are occupied by refugees and IDPs, or roughly 5,000 rooms.

"Global university rankings are compiled based on the number of foreign students enrolled. Most foreign students refuse to study at BSU due to dormitory issues," Maharramov said.

According to the rector, 1,500 foreign students study at BSU. A total of 6,813 foreign students study in Azerbaijan.
