Drug smugglers sentenced

Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept.1 / Trend H. Bagirov /

Four people found guilty of smuggling 65 kg of hashish from Iran to Azerbaijan were sentenced today to a total of 50 years in jail.

The Serious Crimes Court handed down prison terms to Gadjirza Eyvazov, born in 1948, his nephew Zahid Khamdamov, born in 1965, Ganbar Saliyev, born in 1975, and Khatam Aliyev, born in 1976, all four of whom are residents of the Astara region which borders Iran.

The Court sentenced Saliyev to 14 years imprisonment, Khamdamov to 13 years, Aliyev to 12 years, and Eyvazov to 11 years.

The defendants conspired to smuggle large quantities of drugs through the Iranian-Azerbaijani border.

It was found that on Eyvazov's instruction, the hash was smuggled by Iranians from the Astara region to Azerbaijan, then taken by Khamdamov to his uncle.

Then, on Eyvazov's instruction, his relative Ganbar Saliyev loaded the drugs into a UAZ car driven by Aliyev and transported to a place near the Astara region's Kijaba village.

Eyvazov, Khamdamov, Saliyev and Aliyev were arrested, and during inspection of the car the National Security Ministry employees found and seized about 65 kg of hashish.
