An Azerbaijani human rights activist has appealed to the Iranian president asking for permission to monitor prisons in the country.

Head of the Azerbaijani Anti-Torture Committee Elchin Behbudov told Trend that he has appealed to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with the written request.

The letter reflects concern about the detention of Azerbaijanis, who are citizens of Iran, in the country's prisons, torture and inhuman attitudes toward these individuals, and their death as a result of torture.

"Three Azerbaijanis detained in Iranian prisons died as a result of torture. Though they were Iranian citizens, they were Azerbaijanis, and we cannot be indifferent to such torture," he said.

Behbudov said if his request for the monitoring is accepted, it will be held in several prisons, in which the Azerbaijanis are detained, where he will meet with these individuals.

The letter will be submitted to the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan today, Behbudov said.
