Most female prisoners in Azerbaijan were accused of drug and human trafficking, fraud and murder.
About 332 women are serving at the Penal Institution for Women No. 4, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry's Penitentiary Service reported. Given the number of prisoners in police cells, the number of women prisoners is in total roughly 400-420.
Some 89 women are imprisoned for drug trafficking. Most are detained on charges of illegal drug transportation across borders in large quantities.
A total of 76 other female prisoners have been convicted of murder.
Some 65 have been imprisoned for human trafficking and prostitution and 63 prisoners have been imprisoned for fraud, theft and disorderly behavior.
