ANAS: Seismic activity threatens Azerbaijan's infrastructure

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 21 / Trend, I. Isabalayeva /

From the seismic point of view Azerbaijan is situated in a very dangerous zone, the ANAS Geology Institute's Geodynamics and Seismology Department Head Fakhraddin Gadirov told journalists on Tuesday.

"As a result of movement along the Arabian tectonic plate, constant pressure occurs. The resulting deformation produces earthquakes, volcanic eruptions are taking place, new fissures and cracks form on the land. This poses a great threat to Azerbaijan's infrastructure, especially in regards to oil," Gadirov said.

He said part of the Institute's work constitutes monitoring of geodynamic conditions. The other direction is using other seismic methods, including examining the damage after the seismic processes on oil fields.

"The geodynamic situation in Azerbaijan is not so good - some territories are very dangerous. Strong deformation processes occur there and earthquakes occurring far away are felt in some areas nearby. We are fortunate that there is no infrastructure in these areas", Gadirov said.

He said the Institute's employees have been conducting joint research with U.S. experts for over ten years.

"Serious work is underway to ensure Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline's seismic safety; deformation processes are under control. At present, the BTC's seismic situation is normal", Gadirov stressed.
