Azerbaijan’s traffic police: Cessation of import of vehicles without ABS to reduce number of accidents

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 28 / Trend M.Aliyev /

Cessation of import of vehicles without anti-lock braking system (ABS) and airbags to Azerbaijan will lead to a decrease in the number of accidents and fatal crashes, head of the Main Office of Traffic Police Kamran Aliyev told Trend on Tuesday.

He said the ABS system in general may lead to fewer accidents.

"ABS is a system of locking moving wheels of the car, which prevents the change of direction, sliding during braking," he said.

He noted airbag directly affects the severity of accidents.

"If at the time of the accident airbag, which protects a person, opens then there may be no blows, injuries and deaths. In vehicles not equipped with airbags, the likelihood of fatal injuries resulting from accidents is much higher," Mr Aliyev said.

He said from the day the law comes into force import of vehicles not equipped with this equipment, will be banned regardless of where they are produced.

According to the State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents, from May 1 Azerbaijan will impose a ban on vehicles without anti-lock braking system (ABS) and airbags.
