Azerbaijan, Baku, April 19 / Trend I.Isabalayeva /

Another extension of the operation life of the second power unit of the Armenian nuclear power plant (NPP) increases the likelihood of an accident, the Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Adil Garibov told Trend on Thursday.

It should be noted that the operation of the second unit of nuclear power plants was licensed until September 1, 2016.

Due to the delay in construction of new power unit Armenian government has decided to extend the life of the current block.

The second unit of Armenian NPP is operating normally, said Garibov.

Despite this, it is necessary to consider the issue of removal of the accident, if it happens on this unit.

"This issue must be addressed. I was told that even if the reactor is operating normally, it's still necessary to determine how it will behave during an earthquake because it is located in a seismic zone," said the director of the institute.

He said Azerbaijan raised the issue before the IAEA, but there hasn't been any reaction yet.

Garibov considers important solidarity of neighboring countries on the issue of suspension of power unit.
