Azerbaijan has strengthened the measures on social protection of journalists, head of the socio-political department of the presidential administration Vugar Aliyev said at an event today held on the occasion of National Press Day celebrated on July 22. He said that National Press Day is widely celebrated in Azerbaijan.

One of the main measures implemented in 2012 within the national press development is connected with the events conducted in Baku and regions to celebrate the anniversary of the national press founder Hasan bey Zardabi, which were organised as a result of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's decree on June 4, Aliyev said.

He added that Azerbaijan will continue supporting the development of professional, independent journalism.

"Awarding journalists in Azerbaijan has become a good tradition," he said. "The number of professional articles has increased in Azerbaijani journalism. We would like to have more professional journalists."

Azerbaijan celebrates the 137th anniversary of the national press on July 22 this year. Despite the first Azerbaijani newspaper Ekinchi, having been published for over two years from July 22, 1875 to September 1877, it played a significant role in forming and developing the national press. One can say that Ekinchi had an enlightening mission. It became popular amongst the intelligentsia and general public in a short period.
