More than 100,000 prisoners in Iran are serving sentences for drug crimes, deputy head of Iran's Drug Control Headquarters Taha Taheri was quoted today by İRNA as saying.

He said that the plants containing narcotic substances are grown in Afghanistan on a legal basis. The U.S. and Great Britain have annual plans for planting these plants in Afghanistan. The leaders of the drug smugglers are in other countries, rather than in Iran.

Iran is mainly engaged in drug trafficking, he said.

He added that more than 3,600 police officers were killed during the drug combat operations over the last 30 years.

Earlier, chairman of Iran's Prison Service Gulamhuseyn Ismaili said that a half of the prisoners in the country have been sentenced for drug crimes and only 20 percent are serving sentences for theft.

According to the information released in the Iranian media, there are 220,000 inmates in Iranian prisons. The number of prisoners in Iran is much higher compared to Asian countries and other world countries.
