MP: religious schools impossible in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov 16 /Trend M.Aliyev/

It is impossible to open religious schools in Azerbaijan, but they could be organized in a different manner, member of the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament Fazil Mustafa told Trend on Friday.

"It is impossible to open religious schools in Azerbaijan. If such schools were established, foreign governments would be able to bring people they need by financing such schools. This is contrary to our interests," the MP said.

The MP said that such schools in Turkey are funded by the people.

"According to Azerbaijani law, such schools must be registered with the Ministry of Education, which is a very difficult issue," Fazil Mustafa said.

The MP believes that the issue can be solved by organizing religious education in existing schools.

"There is no other way, but to hold religion classes in high schools," Mustafa said.

The director of the Institute for Human Rights of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Ayten Mustafayeva recently proposed creation of religious schools.
