Iran's population increases by almost three percent

The population of Iran in the first quarter of the current year (the year in Iran starts on March 21) increased by 2.9 percent compared to the same period last year, amounting to 76.7 million people, the director of Iran's Census Bureau Ali Akbar Mahzun said on Saturday at a press conference, the Iranian news agency Fars reported.

The population of Iran in the first quarter of the current year (the year in Iran starts on March 21) increased by 2.9 percent compared to the same period last year, amounting to 76.7 million people, the director of Iran's Census Bureau Ali Akbar Mahzun said on Saturday at a press conference, the Iranian Fars news agency reported.

According to the director of the bureau, 51 percent of the population are men, 49 percent - women.

"Out of the total population 70 percent are those between ages 15-64," Mahzun said.

Mahzun added that, in the first quarter of this year 341,400 children were born in the country, of which 175,579 are boys, 165,821 are girls.

The highest number of births is in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, while the lowest number of births is observed in the provinces of Tehran, Mazandaran and Gilan, Mahzun said.

"The number of deaths during this period amounted 90,108 people," Mahzun said.
