Azerbaijan, Baku, August 8/ Trend, M.Aliyev/
Scientists at the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) have put forward a proposal on a border strip separating Europe and Asia, ANAS reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, if this proposal is accepted, then Azerbaijan will belong to European continent from a geographical point of view.
The border separating Europe and Asia begins at the Black Sea, passes through the watershed of the Greater Caucasus, Dubrar and Kimchi mountains, the northern part of the Absheron peninsular and further on through the Caspian Sea, merging with the line proposed by Russian and Kazakh scientists.
Later on it passes through the Magistau peninsular of Kazakhstan, along the Eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains and merges with the border at the Arctic Ocean. The border strip which is earmarked to be drawn through Azerbaijan is determined jointly with the Geographical Society in accordance with international rules.
According to the report, while determining the southern border between Europe and Asia in 1964, the adopted international scientific and geographical rules were not taken into consideration. In particular, the watershed of the Greater Caucasus and other natural and geographical factors were not taken into account and the border was unreasonably drawn through the centre of the Kuma-Manych depression, Director of the Institute of Geographyand corresponding member of ANAS, Ramiz Mammadov said.
Currently, the Institute experts have set symbolic pointers of the border separating Europe and Asia, not far from the village of Fatmai and Altiagac village in the Khizi region.
