The conference on the 'Joint approach to energy security: Position of NATO and other parties', is being held in Baku. It is co-organised by the Strategic Studies Centre under the Azerbaijani president and NATO.

Moderator of the first session expert on security and energy issues Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, has presented a full overview of the evolution of NATO's approach to energy security for the last 10 years.

"After the initial discussions at the summit in Riga in 2006, a decision was made to define the principles of NATO's role in energy security at the Bucharest summit in 2008," Aslanbayli said. The impact of the energy demand by NATO member states and their safety and the importance of the existing energy infrastructure were highlighted in the new strategic concept adopted by NATO in 2010."

According to Aslanbayli, NATO can play a more active and certain role in ensuring energy security in the region and security of the Southern Gas Corridor.

"The successful and long partnership with the regional countries now requires a qualitatively new collaboration level," Aslanbayli said. "Cooperation in energy infrastructure protection can make a significant contribution by bringing the transition of these relations to a new level."
