Azerbaijan intends to continue to do everything possible to develop and strengthen friendly relations with Russia, vice president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, chairperson of the Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia (AYOR), Leyla Aliyeva said.

Azerbaijan intends to continue to do everything possible to develop and strengthen friendly relations with Russia, vice president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, chairperson of the Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia (AYOR), Leyla Aliyeva said.

Aliyeva made the remarks on Dec. 20 at a meeting with the governor of Volgograd region, Sergei Bozhenov.

She said that the great Russian culture is very appreciated in Azerbaijan, and both countries are bound by common history.

"Reconstruction of the Volgograd-Baku Friendship Park, which was financed by Heydar Aliyev Foundation, is just a first step, and there will be a lot more interesting in the future," vice president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation said.

Leyla Aliyeva said the AYOR intends to open its regional office in Volgograd and start exchanging experiences.

Governor of Volgograd region Sergei Bozhenov said that over 80,000 Azerbaijanis reside in Volgograd region.

Along with economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, he stressed the importance of sharing between the public and youth organizations. The governor also said that he intends to make a working visit to Baku next year.

Bozhenov believes that Azerbaijan in the near future can become an important transport hub for transit flights to other countries, and stressed that it is reasonable to open a flight connecting Baku and Volgograd.

Upon the end of the meeting, an awarding ceremony was held, where Leyla Aliyeva was awarded the medal "For merits to Volgograd region".

The region's governor noted that Leyla Aliyeva is the first foreign representative who has been awarded this medal for her public activities.

A protocol of intentions between Baku's Garadagh district and the Volgograd region was also signed during the event.

The chief executive of Garadagh district Suleyman Mikayilov said that the parties intend to continue to cooperate closely in many areas, including in the economy, culture, sports and others.
