A new influenza epidemic has spread in Iran, head of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control of the Ministry of Health Mohammad Mehdi Gouya said, the Iranian Fars news agency reported on Jan.22.

Since early 2014 up till now (year in Iran begins on March 21) some 50,000 people caught the flu in the country, according to Gouya. The condition of around 500 of them is serious.

The centre's head stressed that the number of people who caught flu has increased this year compared to last year.

Gouya warned about the spread of a new influenza epidemic and pointed out that about 95 percent of the diseased caught the H3N2 virus which has killed nine people up to now.

The factors such as polluted air and weather conditions affect the spread of influenza, according to the centre's head.

Gouya also said that swine flu hasn't been eradicated in Iran.
