Today Baku hosts the Sixth International Scientific Olympiad. The event was ceremonially opened with a congratulatory letter of Azerbaijan's First Lady, Heydar Aliyev Foundation President, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva.
"For many years, independent Azerbaijan has been hosting international competitions and contests in the field of culture, science and sport. In this regard, conducting the 6th International Scientific Olympiad in Azerbaijan is not accidental. It is noteworthy that the Year of the Child in Azerbaijan ends with such a large-scale event," Mrs.Aliyeva's congratulatory letter, which Heydar Aliyev Foundation Executive Director Anar Alakbarov read, says.
"The health of children and teens, their education and formation as individuals are one of important criteria for us. The state takes care of science and education as an important component of future development. Presently, Azerbaijan implements numerous local and regional projects of international scale and reforms, thanks to knowledge and abilities of young professionals. Our future activities will be possible through knowledge, skills and experience, which the youth gains today," the letter says.
"Adolescence is a challenging period in the life of every man. In this period the person displays great interest in science, defines the future development and ways to work. In this regard, participation to the International Science Olympiad and the victory will live in your memory," the letter says.
Speaking at the opening ceremony Rector of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy Hafiz Pashayev said that such subjects as biology, chemistry and physics are very important in the development of science in each country. "At present, Azerbaijan is on the way of serious change. The Olympics will open opportunities for teens and establish new relations," he said.
According to Pashayev, heads of the Organizing Committee of Olympic Games and 30 Azerbaijani scientists developed over 500 jobs, which were discussed during the more than 60 meetings. Not victory, but participation, as well as the opportunity to make new friends and acquire knowledge, is the main thing, he said.
Education Minister Misir Mardanov said that winners of the Olympiad will be admitted to universities outside of the competition. "We expect great results from this Olympics," he added.
President of the International Science Olympiads Masna Ginting said in Indonesia winners of these competitions receive scholarships during the entire period of study in the country's universities and this experience can be applied in Azerbaijan.
About 600 teenagers and teachers from 49 countries worldwide involved in the Olympiads that will last until Dec.11. The competition is held in English. Earlier in 2004-2005 Olympiad was held in Indonesia, in 2006 in Brazil, in 2007 in Taiwan, and in 2008 in Korea.
