Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr.1 / Trend K. Zarbaliyeva /

UN Secretary-General addressed to the world community in connection with International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

This work requires vigilance, serious efforts and joint activity in many directions, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his statement, UN office in Azerbaijan told Trend.

"Let's once again commit ourselves to these rescue efforts for the sake of our children to live in the world free from danger caused by mines and explosive devices," said in the statement.

Mines and explosive devices remained after the war still cause terrible events. These arms leads to serious injuries, wounds and death, delay the construction and reconstruction operations in the territory, harms the environment and impedes the work on socio-economic development, even after the conflicts, Ban Ki-moon said.

UN Assistance in Mine Action over the past two decades has been provided to over 60 countries and territories. UN activities on neutralization of mines conclude promotion of relevant international legal documents, including the Mine Ban Convention, the fifth protocol on explosive devices remained after the war, and the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which will come into force August 1 2010, Ban Ki-moon said.

April 4 is declared the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
