UN Secretary General urges world community to prevent genocide

Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr. 7 / Trend K.Zarbaliyeva /

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the world community to prevent acts of genocide. This was stated in the Secretary-General's message that Trend received from the UN Baku office.

Apr.7 is 16th anniversary of the genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda. In 1994, as a result of the genocide, which lasted 100 days, people from the Hutu tribe ruthlessly killed 800,000 people belonging to the Tutsis tribe. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) was established in November 1994 by the United Nations Security Council to judge people responsible for the Rwandan Genocide .

The United Nations is fully committed to securing justice for the victims of genocide and to preventing future atrocities, the message says.

The International Criminal Tribunal on Rwanda (ICTR) delivered the first ever verdicts in relation to genocide by an international court.  The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda continues to deliver justice and ensure accountability.  I salute Member States for their continued support and urge cooperation with the ICTR to arrest and hand over the remaining fugitives," the message says.
