The UN Security Council decided Thursday against extending the UN observer mission in Syria, dpa reported.
"UNSMIS will expire," the French ambassador to the UN, Gerard Araud, said, referring to the UN Supervision Mission in Syria. He spoke after closed-door deliberations by the 15-member panel.
But he said a UN presence in the war-torn country will continue.
In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Araud said he had spoken out for the opening of a liaison office in Damascus.
