Mohammed Moammar Gaddafi and Aisha Moammar Gaddafi and their family members have moved from Algeria to Oman, violating a travel ban imposed by the UN Security Council, a sanctions panel reported on Tuesday, dpa reported.
The panel told the 15-nation council that the Algerian government confirmed on June 5 that the two individuals, who are subject to the travel ban, and their family members, who are not under the ban, had left for Oman.
The panel said it had launched an investigation. Some family members of Libya's leader Moammar Gaddafi took refuge in Algeria after he was killed by rebel forces in October 2011, which ended more than four decades of dictatorship.
The council in 2011 imposed the travel ban and froze assets that belonged to Gaddafi's direct family members.
The council held a session to review the situation in Libya and was informed that the country, which is under transition, still suffers from the legacy of weak state institutions since the toppling of the Gaddafi regime.
"The political and security challenges that now face the country may well be the legacy of decades of authoritarian rule, dysfunctional state institutions and confusion around political norms," said Tarek Mitri, the UN special representative in Libya.
Mitri is heading a UN mission in Tripoli to support the country's transition to democracy.
