Review of transport sector in Azerbaijan (January-November 2016)

Some events occurred in the Azerbaijani transport sector in November 2016:

- The ring railway is being restored in Baku. Azerbaijan Railways CJSC started to overhaul 29.2-kilometer Baku (passenger)-Pirshagi-Sumgayit ring railway. The project implementation will link the center of Baku, "8th kilometer", Sabunchu, Zabrat, Pirshagi, Kurdakhani, Goradil, Saray settlements, as well as Sumgayit and partially solve the transportation problems;

Another stage of work has been launched as part of the overhaul of the Baku-Boyuk Kesik railway, namely, the Navai - Pirsaat railway section with a length of 4,275 meters. Around 2,100 meters of Navai station and 2,175 meters of Pirsaat station will be repaired as part of the work. The project implementation started in October 2016. Around 175 kilometers of the railway were overhauled up till now;

The first stage of construction of the Baku International Sea Trade Port in Azerbaijan’s Alat settlement is underway.

Major work is currently underway at the Ro-Ro and dry cargo transshipment terminals, as well as at the construction of a 650-meter quay, where five ships will be able to moor at the same time.

- The construction of a road with a length of 12.7 kilometers, which will connect Novkhani and Pirshagi settlements, was launched in the northern part of Absheron peninsula along the coast. The road will connect the Sumgayit-Jorat-Novkhani highway with a new ring road along the coast, ensure convenient and unimpeded movement from Sumgayit to the northern and north-eastern part of the Absheron Peninsula, which will facilitate the traffic flow;

President of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL) Jahangir Asgarov and Director General of Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Yousef Sulaiman Al Fouzan signed an intergovernmental agreement on air traffic between the two countries as part of the visit to Baku.

Lifan 820 Premium car, produced at the Nakhchivan automobile plant (NAZ), was presented in Baku.

The car with a 2.4 liter engine, six-speed automatic transmission, 161 horsepower, maximal speed - 180 km / h, is provided with all safety and comfort systems.

Several documents have been signed during the “Strategic Partnership 1520: The Caspian Region” International Rail Business Forum, which kicked off in Baku.

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and Ukrainian Railways PJSC signed a memorandum of understanding. The document was signed by Javid Gurbanov, head of Azerbaijan Railways, and Marek Zalesny, a member of the Management Board of Ukrainian Railways.

Moreover, a memorandum of intention on strategic cooperation between the Russia-based TransContainer PJSC and China’s Dalian Port Company Limited, a memorandum of cooperation between TransContainer PJSC and Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, an agreement on strategic partnership between the Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFAI) and Russian Railways Logistics JSC, a memorandum of cooperation between Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and Rusagrotrans CJSC, as well as a memorandum of cooperation between RZDstroy JSC and Baku Metro CJSC were signed during the event.

The Azerbaijani transport sector carried 202.6 million tons of cargo in January-November 2016 or by 0.5 percent less than in January-November 2015, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report said.

According to the report, the volume of non-oil cargo increased by 2.5 percent and reached 151.3 million tons.

Around 82.1 percent of the total volume of goods transported accounted for the private sector during this period.

Some 63.9 percent of all cargo were transported by vehicles, 26.6 percent - by pipelines, 6.9 percent - by railway, 2.5 percent - by ships, 0.1 percent – planes.

Some 1.75 billion people used passenger transport in January-November 2016, which is 2 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Most of the passengers were transported by vehicles (88.5 percent), metro (11.3 percent) and the rest part – other types of transport.

Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 129.4 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles, which is 2.8 percent more than in the same period of 2015.

The volume of passenger transportation reached 1.55 billion people (a 2.5 percent growth compared to Jan.-Nov. 2015). Some 96.1 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent - by cars.

Freight turnover by vehicles increased by 2.8 percent during the reporting period, while passenger turnover - by 2.5 percent.

Some 14 million tons of cargo were transported by railway in January-November or by 10.6 percent less than in January-November 2015.

On average, the number of loaded carriages made up 440 and unloaded - 420.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 18,000 tons, in western direction - 5,000 tons and in southern direction – 1,700 tons.

Around 5.16 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-November 2016 or by 16.8 percent less than in January-November 2015. Some 42.1 percent of the transported goods accounted for oil cargo. The volume of goods handled in Azerbaijani ports amounted to 8.26 million tons in January-November.

The volume of international transit cargo handled in the country’s ports reached 93.6 percent. As of December 1, 2016, around 43,600 tons of import cargo left in the ports for transportation.

Some 40.25 million tons of oil were transported via main oil pipelines in January-November. Some 76.9 percent or 30.94 million tons of oil accounted for BTC.

Some 4.1 million tons of transit oil were transported via the BTC in January-November.

Gas transportation via main gas pipelines made up 18.89 billion cubic meters in January-November 2016 or by 1.5 percent less than in January-November 2015. Some 35.2 percent of the transported gas accounted for the South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 6.65 billion cubic meters of gas were transported via this pipeline.

Some 1.84 million passengers were transported by air transport in January-November which is 7.9 percent more than in January-November 2015. Some 0.2 percent of shipment by this kind of transport accounted for the private sector.

Some 197.2 million people were transported by metro decreasing by 2.4 percent compared to the same period of 2015.

Some 41.36 million tons of cargo were transported through the Eurasian transport corridor TRACECA (Europe-Caucasus-Asia) in January-October 2016, the committee said.

Around 62.8 percent (almost 26 million tons) of the total volume of transported cargo accounted for vehicles, 27.7 percent (11.46 million tons) – railway, 9.5 percent (3.9 million tons) – ships. Some 14.9 percent (6.18 million tons) of cargo accounted for transit.
