Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January 2017)

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January 2017, 3.4 billion manat accounted for the Azerbaijani consumer market, which is by 0.3 percent more than its turnover for January 2016.

The monthly consumer expenses are estimated at 347.1 manat per capita in January 2017, which is by 35.2 manat more compared to January 2016.

The retail trade turnover amounted to 2.6 billion manat in January 2017, which is by 1.3 percent more than in January 2016.

Legal entities ensured 11.9 percent of the trade turnover.

Some 265.7 manat account for the people’s shopping monthly, which is by 31.8 manat more than in January 2016.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, food trade (1,298.2 million manat) increased by 0.8 percent in real terms and reached 62 percent of the retail trade in January 2017, while retail sales of non-food products (476.8 million manat) showed a 2 percent real growth and ensured 38 percent of turnover.

Prices

According to the State Statistics Committee, the prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services increased by 11.9 percent in January 2017 compared to January 2016.

Such a high rate of inflation in the country was the result of the impact of national currency devaluation.

The food prices increased by 14.5 percent, non-food items - by 12.3 percent, paid services – 8 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2017 compared to January 2016.

The prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services increased by 2.3 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2017 compared to December 2016.

The food prices increased by 2.8 percent, non-food items - by 2 percent, paid services – by 1.9 percent in Azerbaijan during this period.

The prices on rice, flour, buckwheat, macaroni, poultry, beef and lamb, fish products, dairy products, sausages, eggs, cheese, butter and vegetable oil, sugar and granulated sugar, coffee, tea and cocoa, apples, pears, quinces, bananas, persimmons, kiwi, oranges, tangerines, cabbages, greens, potatoes, carrots, beets, onions, garlic, pomegranates, tomatoes and cucumbers increased for the month.

The prices on other foodstuff were not greatly changed.

The prices on fabrics, clothing and footwear, building materials, furniture, household utensils, carpets and other floor coverings, home textiles, jewelry, glass products, dishes and cutlery, household appliances, computers, stationery, cars and spare parts for them increased in January 2017.

The prices on other non-food items were not greatly changed.

The prices on international passenger transportation to the CIS countries by air and rail decreased, while the prices on international air passenger transportation to other countries increased in January 2017.

The prices on rental housing, repair of household appliances and cars, dental and cosmetic services, as well as hotel services increased in January 2017.

The prices on other paid services remained unchanged.

The base index of consumer prices, calculated except for the goods and services subject to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetables) increased by 11.4 percent in January 2017 compared to January 2016.

The producer prices on industrial products increased by 5 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2017 compared to December 2016.

During the reporting period, producer prices in the mining industry increased by 6 percent, while in the manufacturing industry – by 1.7 percent.

The producer prices on industrial products increased by 92.7 percent in January 2017 compared to January 2016, while the producer prices in the mining industry - by over twofold and in the processing industry – 39.8 percent.
