Appointment of new prince marks start of reforms in Saudi Arabia: expert

By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

The US is putting efforts to have Saudi Arabia conduct the reforms, which will help create favorable conditions for cooperation with Israel and Washington, Ozcan Tikit, head of foreign news department at Turkey’s Haberturk TV, told Trend.

Ozcan Tikit said appointment of Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud as Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince should be regarded based on this principle.

On June 21, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has appointed his son, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, as the crown prince, replacing his nephew, Mohammed bin Nayef.

Tikit noted that the crown prince has a plan – Saudi Vision 2030, which provides for major economic changes.

Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud unveiled the plan on April 25. The development strategy includes creation of the world's largest sovereign investment fund that will manage assets worth more than $2 trillion.

Ozcan Tikit noted that these changes are expected to contribute to the weakening of religious, as well as a number of economic organizations in Saudi Arabia.

Tikit did not exclude that Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud will follow the policy of the US and the UAE, which declared "war" against political Islam.

“With the US assistance, it is wanted to initiate new political changes in the region. But if these changes do not take into account the specifics of the region, this may lead to more serious crisis in the future,” he said.
