Secret documents on Iran must be verified: Russia's representative to IAEA

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 25 / Trend E.Ostapenko /

The secret documents that allegedly prove the military directivity of Iran's nuclear program should be checked, Russia´s Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna Alexander Zmeyevskiy said.

"Indeed, the press publicized many articles on this topic," he told Trend . "There are assumptions that the agency's some members submitted several documents to the secretariat, but this needs to be verified."

He said in its work Russia's representative office relies on the IAEA's conclusions and they "do not contain any conclusions about the presence of undeclared nuclear activities in Iran."

In mid December, the Times newspaper reported that Iran is testing a key component needed to build an atomic bomb, referring to secret documents from an unknown source.

These documents, dating to early 2007, describe a four-year plan for testing a neutron initiator, which is a nuclear bomb component triggering the explosion mechanism. The papers also cover technical documentation and mention the use of uranium deuteride, which independent experts say is only used in nuclear weapons.

According to the paper, the secret documents had already been in the hands of the intelligence "of a number of the Western countries," including Britain. A source in the IAEA confirmed that they were referred to the UN monitors.

"We have repeatedly expressed interest in clarifying all outstanding issues on Iran's nuclear program, so that the IAEA was able to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran," Zmeyevskiy added.

The U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying that its nuclear program is aimed to meet the country's electricity needs.
