Iranian MP says Amano’s Iran visit reveals significance of next Iran-P5+1 talks

Iranian legislator Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh says the visit by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general, Yukiya Amano, to Iran underscores the significance of the upcoming negotiations between the Islamic Republic and six major world powers, Press TV reported.

Falahatpisheh also said Sunday that Amano's visit can result in positive outcomes if the agency's chief acts on his technical and legal obligations and not on the basis of political assignments.

The Iranian lawmaker further noted that the forthcoming round of the talks between Iran and the P5+1 would yield better results when the negotiations take place within the framework of the IAEA statute and not in an atmosphere of the UN Security Council's resolutions on Iran.

The official emphasized that Tehran has been pursuing its rights under the IAEA statute, adding that if Amano also manages to act on the basis of the document, it will elevate the agency's legal status, helping the diplomatic efforts to settle the Western dispute over Iran's nuclear energy program.

Amano arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with Iranian officials on "issues of mutual interest and a closer cooperation" between Iran and the IAEA.

He will hold talks with Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili, and Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi during his visit.

Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA deputy director general for safeguards, and Rafael Mariano Grossi, the assistant director general for policy, will also accompany the UN nuclear body's chief on his trip to Tehran.

Amano's visit comes ahead of the May 23 talks between Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany) in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The latest round of the talks between Iran and the six members of the P5+1 group was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.
