At least six people were killed Saturday when an explosion hit a military patrol in northern Iraq, security officials said, DPA reported.

The dead included four civilians and two army soldiers. The blast occurred in the northern city of Mosul, added the officials.

"Three other soldiers were injured in the explosion that targeted the patrol at the entrance to an urban area," Brigadier Mohammed al-Jaburi of the city's security department told dpa.

Violence is not uncommon in Mosul, a city of around 2 million people, located 400 kilometres north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Earlier this month, five people were killed and 16 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a hairdresser's salon in central Mosul.
