Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov during his official visit to Switzerland met with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Sven Alkalaj in Geneva, the Turkmen government said on Wednesday.

According to the report, Alkalaj stressed the relevance of Ashgabat's initiative to establish an expert group under the aegis of the UN to develop a universal mechanism for the reliable and safe transit of energy resources to the world markets.

It is expected that in the future one can talk about the establishment of an Energy Council of the UN, designed to ensure "political format and organisational conditions for a systematic, professional discussion of all energy issues".

According to a British Petroleum (BP) report, Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world after Russia, Iran and Qatar for its natural gas reserves. At present, the country exports natural gas to China, Iran and Russia.

The extra pipeline to Russia (Caspian gas pipeline - through Kazakhstan), Europe (Trans-Caspian gas pipeline - Nabucco, or as part of the AGRI-on the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan) and India (Trans-Afghan gas pipeline via Pakistan) are among the planned gas pipelines from Turkmenistan.

"The optimal balance of national and common interests, mutual benefit and equal cooperation are the main principles of the establishment and development of economic relations of Turkmenistan with the world community," Berdimuhammadov said.
