A meeting was held between Secretary of State - Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Philip Gordon in Geneva. The meeting, which discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, was held on Oct.11, Russian Foreign Ministry's official website reported.
The sides exchanged views regarding impact of the Georgian parliamentary elections on the situation in the South Caucasus region and the state of Tbilisi's relations with neighboring states.
The meeting also discussed the development of relations of Russia and the U.S. with states of Transcaucasia and the situation around the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
