An Egyptian was killed and three others injured in a bomb attack on a church in western Libya, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Sunday, DPA reported.

The attack targeted the Egyptian Orthodox Church in the town of Misrata late Saturday, according to the ministry.

"The Egyptian embassy in Tripoli is holding contacts with the Libyan interior and foreign ministries to take urgent measures to secure buildings belonging to the Egyptian Church in Libya," said the ministry's spokesman Amr Rushdi.

The official did not identify the victims or say who could be behind the attack. There was no official Libyan comment.

Libya has seen a proliferation of arms following the overthrow of dictator Moamer Gaddafi in an armed uprising last year.

The North African country's new rulers have recently ordered that illegal militias be disbanded and launched a disarmament drive in an effort to re-establish security.
