An Iranian parliamentary delegation has visited Tehran's Evin detention center to investigate prison conditions, Press TV reports.

During the one day visit on Monday, the delegation talked to a number of inmates about their conditions and their treatment by prison authorities.

Speaking to a Press TV correspondent after the visit, spokesman of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Seyyed Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini said despite some complaints about prison's food and sleeping conditions the facility meets international standards.

"Evin prison is managed under proper conditions. Some inmates complained about food and sleeping conditions, they made several requests and proposals, which we will discuss with Judiciary officials. The idea is to improve their conditions, even though we know that prison is not a good place for anyone," he said.

Referring to complaints from several Iranians after their release from prisons in the United States about supposed violation of their basic rights, the spokesman added that prison conditions in Iran are far better than those in the US.

"Western governments politicize everything about Iran including prison conditions, but the truth is that despite Western allegations, Evin Prison has standard conditions," Naqavi-Hosseini added.

Constructed in 1972, Evin Prison has hospital, library, sports grounds, and facilities for research and distance education. Due to the number of intellectuals that the prison housed before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it was nicknamed "Evin University."
