Azerbaijani President: Fighting corruption and bribery must be strengthened

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 13 / Trend /

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has urged to strengthen fighting corruption in the country.

"Fighting corruption and bribery must be strengthened," the President said at the conference on results of the fourth year of the "State Program on Socio-Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2009-2013".

"I think that we have not achieved the desired results in this case, despite that the measures are being taken and will continue to be taken. Unfortunately, this work is not at the proper level," President Aliyev said.

He underscored that it is necessary to eliminate corruption to become a developed country.

"Several factors are required to do this, and they all exist in Azerbaijan - strong political will and international experience. We examine this experience and the penalties. There must be and will be systematic reforms," the President said.

He underscored that there is a comprehensive approach to the issue, as certain operations must be conducted.

"But I want to say that this work does not satisfy me. The counter corruption activity must be tougher and have more significant results," he noted.

"In some cases, while arresting the individuals infected with the disease of corruption, dozens of supporters for these people appear," he said. "They protect them, establish committees, and make appeals. Everybody must be amenable to law and all have a single right before the law."

The president has urged all organizations, including law enforcement agencies, to toughen their activity.

"The systematic reforms must be carried out more thoroughly," he said. "E-services, ASAN service, e-government are among them. They will become major tools against corruption."

President Aliyev said the ASAN center is already operating.

"Until the end of the year, at least all Baku districts, Ganja, Sumgayit, will be fully covered. It's possible that other cities will be covered by this system as well. In the coming years this system must be applied in all cities of the country. We see good results of that," the President underscored.
