Insurgents killed one policeman and injured three in north-western Pakistan Saturday, an official said, dpa reported.

A pickup truck carrying the policemen came under attack near Akora Khattak, about 50 kilometres east of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincical capital Peshawar.

"Three men on a motorbike lobbed a grenade before opening fire on the vehicle," police officer Rajab Ali Khan told dpa by phone. "The injured policemen retaliated and shot dead all the attackers."

No group claimed responsibility, but Khan said an attacker named Saddam Hussein carried an identity card that linked him to an Islamic school in Akora Khattak.

The Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary is known to have spawned several key Afghan Taliban leaders.
