Former Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg will work as the special adviser of the European Union on legal and constitutional issues in Georgia, the press service of the prime minister of Georgia announced on Tuesday.

This issue was discussed during a meeting of the Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili with Hammarberg in the house of government.

Hammarberg was appointed to Georgia by the vice president of the European Commission Catherine Ashton and the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle according to the invitation of Ivanishvili.

"Thomas Hammarberg's new job is to consult the Georgian government on issues of judicial, penitentiary and constitutional reform, the protection of human rights etc. during the next several months," Ivanishvili stated after the meeting.

He noted that he is ready to hear Hammarberg's criticism, and that there are a lot of problems in the transition period. "We are ready to build a democratic society and we are really relying on this human rights expert", he stated.

Hammarberg noted that there are appropriate conditions for building democratic state. "I was offered work in Georgia and I gladly agreed because I love this country," the ex-commissioner noted.

He is going to meet with the ministers, representatives of opposition and NGOs and then give his recommendations
