Iranian MP: dialogue only way to stop Syrian crisis

An Iranian lawmaker said the ongoing crisis in Syria should be solved through a "Syrian-Syrian" dialogue inside the Arab country, Press TV reported.

The Syrian issue "should be solved through a Syrian-Syrian way; therefore the government and its opposition should hold a dialogue without the interference of Western countries in order to find a way out of the crisis," said Mohammad Esmaili, member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

Esmaili criticized the United States and its allies for attempting to fuel the violence in Syria, saying, "The West in its entirety has stepped in to topple the Syrian government."

The Iranian legislator further highlighted Tehran's prominent role in the Syrian issue, adding, "However, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been smart enough to foil this [Western] conspiracy."

He also stressed that the ongoing turmoil in Syria does not have a military solution.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.
