Education in the field of nuclear physics must be recreated in Azerbaijan, Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Sciences Adil Garibov told Trend on Monday.

According to him, organization of education in this area should not be limited with only lectures. In order to improve the quality of education in the field of nuclear physics, it is necessary first of all to increase the level of basic education, to train bachelors and masters only in Atomic Physics

Garibov said that the teaching of nuclear physics in Azerbaijan and training of personnel in this area are at a very low level.

"Unfortunately, over the past period, the experts working in this field in Azerbaijan grew old, and we don't have new personnel. So the nuclear physics teaching and training in this area are at a very low level," Garibov said.

According to Institute's director, teaching of nuclear physics in Azerbaijan and training of personnel in this area are carried out only at the Institute of Radiation Problems, and that this level does not meet the requirements of our time.

Garibov said that for training of Physics faculty students of Baku State University, they have to be sent to Russia or to other relevant organizations under the contract with International Atomic Energy Agency.

"We should have our own nuclear program. In case if the neighboring countries will have any problems with the nuclear energy, we should also be aware of those problems. The country should have its own human resources. Works are being carried out in this sphere at the governmental level. The State Agency on Nuclear and Radiological Activity Regulation under the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which includes scientific centre "Isotope" has been created. Now our main goal as an academic organization is to create personnel for these organizations," Garibov said.
