OSCE to monitor agitation activities in presidential elections in Azerbaijan

The OSCE mission for observation of presidential elections in Azerbaijan will monitor the registration of candidates and agitation activities, Head of the observation mission Tana de Zulueta told journalists in Baku on Thursday.

The OSCE mission for observation of presidential elections in Azerbaijan will monitor the registration of candidates and agitation activities, the head of the observation mission Tana de Zulueta told journalists in Baku on Thursday.

OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will assess the compliance of presidential elections in Azerbaijan with OSCE commitments and other international standards of democratic elections, as well as with country's laws, the head of the observation mission said.

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on October 9.

"Observers will closely monitor the process of registration of candidates, agitation activities, the work of the election administration and relevant government agencies, implementation of the electoral law and media environment," de Zulueta said.

Answering the question about the Azerbaijani CEC's denial to register Rustam Ibrahimbeyov's candidacy from the National Council, the head of the mission said that this issue was discussed at the meeting of the mission members with Azerbaijani CEC's management. According to de Zulueta the CEC explained this with the candidate's double citizenship.

The ODIHR mission, which will observe the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, includes 13 people.

Tana de Zulueta is the head of the observer mission, and Harald Hartvig Jepsen is the assistant of the head of mission.

The mission also includes political analyst Vadim Zhdanovich, election analysts Adolfo Martinez and Pavel Cabacenco, analyst for legal issues Megan McCabe Fitzgerald, media analyst Elma Sehalic, coordinator of long-term observers Masha Janusevic, operations specialist Pavel Kristof Jurczak, security specialist Valeriu Mija, parliamentary coordinator Sasha Pokrayats, equipment manager Lela Tsaava, financial manager Roman Railean.

30 long-term and 280 short-term observers from the OSCE will arrive in Azerbaijan.

Long-term observers will arrive in Baku on September 9, and short term observers will arrive on October 5.

The distribution of the long-term and short-term observers in the country will be held on September 11 and October 7, respectively.

The briefings for the long-term and short-term observers will be held on September 10-11, and October 6, respectively.

The short-term observers will familiarize with the observation offices on October 9.

A press conference on the results and primary commentaries is scheduled to be held on October 10.

The short-term observers will leave the country on October 11. The long-term observers will leave Azerbaijan on October 15.

The main composition of the mission will leave the country on October 19.
