Turkmenistan’s border troop commander appointed

Lieutenant-General Myrat Islamov was appointed Chief of State Border Service. The new commander of Turkmenistan’s border troops previously worked as the Vice Rector for educational activity of the country’s State Border Institute.

Lieutenant-General Myrat Islamov was appointed Chief of State Border Service. The new commander of Turkmenistan's border troops previously worked as the Vice Rector for educational activity of the country's State Border Institute.

The relevant decree was signed by the President, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The former head of the State Border Service, Major General Aman Garayev was dismissed from this post in connection with a transfer to another job.

The Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper wrote on Monday that at a meeting of the State Security Council, the Turkmen president emphasised that "Turkmenistan's border should remain the one of friendship and good neighbourhood with all bordering states that are important partners for our country in the implementation of projects of regional and international significance".

Turkmenistan has a land border with Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and neighbours across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Kazakhstan.

The country's military doctrine is based on the policy of neutrality and defence sufficiency. Turkmenistan is not included in any of the military-political blocs.
