Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry has developed several changes to existing legislation aimed at improving and increasing the safety of passenger transportation.

The draft law 'On Road Traffic', which is currently being considered by the Majilis (lower house) of the Kazakh parliament, includes an increase in age eligibility for those persons who operate motor vehicles designed for passenger transportation.

"Today, it is necessary to have a D category driver's license to be eligible to control a bus; a driver's license can be obtained by persons older than 21 years," spokesperson of the press service of the Administrative Police's committee, Irina Lukyanina said. "Besides the D category driver's license, the draft law also includes the introduction of the D1 subcategory and increasing the age limit on these categories".

A person who wants to obtain a D1 category driver's license will need to be 21 years of age, have at least three years driving experience and at least one year of experience with a C1 category license.

After the changes, persons wanting to obtain a D category driver's license will need to be 25 years of age, have five years of driving experience, and at least three years of driving experience with a D1 category license.
