Iran does not believe the security deal between the US and Afghanistan would benefit the Afghanistan in the long term, spokeswoman of Iran's foreign ministry Marziyeh Afkham said, IRINN reported on Dec. 3.

The security agreement will have negative results for the region if signed, Afkham said at the press conference in Tehran.

The security agreement spells out terms under which an estimated 10,000 U.S. troops would remain in Afghanistan beyond the original 2014 withdrawal date to assist the government in its war against Taliban. Billions of dollars of assistance to the Afghan security forces and Afghanistan's fledgling democratic institutions is involved.

Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai refuses to sign the agreement.

On Nov. 24, the Loya Jirga, or council of tribal elders convened by Karzai endorsed the bilateral security agreement with the United States and called for the president to sign it immediately.
Once signed, the accord would take effect January 1, 2015.

All international combat forces in Afghanistan are scheduled to withdraw from the country by the end of 2014.

The Afghani president is scheduled to visit Tehran, next week, Afkham said.
