Twenty-seven workers were briefly hospitalized in Germany after a chemical release at a Daimler plant making axles for Mercedes cars, police said Wednesday.

The night-shift workers started coughing after exposure to the chemical, used in equipment to clean metal parts. Police said the cause was still being investigated, dpa reported.

Doctors discharged the workers after checking them, said a Daimler spokesman, who named the substance as benzaldehyde. The plant, which is located in Mettingen - near Stuttgart where Daimler has its main assembly plants - resumed production overnight.
