Egypt begins procedures to release Turkish reporter

Egyptian authorities started late Saturday a series of procedures for the release of Turkish reporter Matin Turan and 83 other defendants in the Ramses Square clashes case, Anadolu Agency reported.

Turan, Turkish state broadcaster TRT correspondent in Cairo, and the other defendants arrived to the Cairo Security Directorate building in downtown Cairo.

They were brought from Tora jail complex in two police vehicles.

Turn and the other defendants are expected to be release any time soon.

An Egyptian court on Thursday ordered the release of the 84 defendants pending investigation into deadly August clashes in Cairo's Ramses Square.

On August 16, clashes erupted outside Cairo's Ramses Square between security forces and protesters angered by the killing two days earlier of hundreds of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

In the ensuing violence, over 50 people were killed and 270 injured, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.

Fleeing the violence, dozens of protesters took refuge inside the nearby Al-Fath Mosque, where they remained holed up before finally being rounded up by security forces.

The defendants, including Turan, face charges of "incitement to violence" and "resisting authorities."
