A round table entitled 'National legislation and challenges arising from the National Action Programme in the field of improving the protection of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan', approved by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on December 27, 2011, is being held in the Azerbaijani Parliament today.
It was jointly organised by the parliamentary committees on human rights, legal policy and state building.
Human Rights Day is annually celebrated by the international community on December 10, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, MP Rabiyyat Aslanova said today.
"Human rights are one of the most important issues of concern to humanity in the 21st Century," she said.
While speaking about the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted after World War II, Aslanova said this declaration was a legal basis for a number of international documents in the field of human rights.
While speaking about Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan which resulted in more than one million refugees and IDPs, Aslanova stressed that it is unacceptable for a UN member state to pursue an aggressive policy against another country in this century.
Aslanova also stressed that Azerbaijan is taking important action in the field of human rights protection.
"A good example of developing the area of human rights in Azerbaijan is the National Action Programme in the field of Human Rights, approved by the Azerbaijani president," she said.
"International organisations have acknowledged that Azerbaijan has achieved great success in the field of human rights."
