Seven people were detained in connection with an armed incident that took place yesterday in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait, according to a joint statement by the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan.

Seven people were detained in connection with an armed incident that took place yesterday in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait, according to a joint statement by the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan.

A conflict broke out between a group of persons belonging to the Khawarij and Salafi extremist movements on Dec. 11 at about 20:30 in a tearoom located in the 10th district of Sumgait, according to the message.

The city's residents Anar Rahimov and Elmar Mammadli were stabbed during the incident.

Grenades and submachine guns were used during the conflict that continued in front of the tearoom. The residents of the Teze Jorat settlement Elshan Musayev and Elnur Nazaraliyev got shrapnel wounds.

The bullets, fired from a submachine gun, hit in the nearest apartment and a car, but no one was injured.

Officers of the city police department and the prosecutor's office immediately arrived at the scene upon receiving information on the incident. They conducted the necessary operative investigative measures; material evidence was found.

Five members of the armed conflict were detained. The residents of Sumgait Zaur Pashayev and Murad Maharramov were detained when they attempted to leave the country.

The search in the apartment of one of the suspects, Elchin Akbarov, revealed two grenades.

The injured persons, Mammadli and Nazaraliyev were taken to a hospital, their condition is satisfactory.

A criminal case was instituted in line with corresponding articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

Operative-search group, consisting of members of the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office, continues measures to identify participants of the incident and bring them to justice.
