One man charged of drug smuggling was hanged in the Iranian Qazvin city prison of the Qazvin province today morning, Fars news agency reported on Dec. 15.

Iranian court has sentenced him to death by hanging due to distributing crack narcotic drug.

Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani had approved the regional court's sentence, according to the report.

The hanged man who was 46 was carrying 500 grams of compressed heroin when arrested, Esmaeil Sadeghi, prosecutor of Qazvin Province said.

He had 13 criminal cases on drug related charges, Sadeghi added.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and the trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of five kilograms are among crimes punishable by death in Iran.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world. During the last 10 months, more than 500 people were hanged in Iran in total.
Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometers of a common border with Afghanistan, through which about 74 percent of opium is smuggled.

According to official estimates, fight against drugs annually cost Iran about $1 billion. The statistics also say that there are about 2 million of drug users in Iran.
