An Israeli soldier was killed late Sunday after a Lebanese soldier opened fire on an Israeli vehicle near the southern border of Naqoura prompting an alert among the ranks of the Lebanese and Israeli armies, according to Haaretz and Lebanese state media.

An Israeli military vehicle was hit by six or seven bullets as it drove along the border just east of an Israel Defence Forces post in Rosh Hanikra, Haaretz reported.

According to Lebanon's Voice of Lebanon, the Israeli Army initially released a statement saying a sniper from the Lebanese armed forces had fired on an Israeli civilian car near Rosh Hanikra crossing.

Israel has lodged a complaint with the Lebanese government and with the United Nations.

"A Lebanese army soldier opened fire at the vehicle after its members tried to infiltrate the Lebanese border near the Naqoura crossing," Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

The Hezbollah-run Al-Manar television said an Israeli force tried to infiltrate Lebanese territory in Naqoura, sparking a clash with the Lebanese army.

Lebanon's state television Tele Liban said the Lebanese and Israeli armies were both on alert on the border and that an Israeli surveillance drone was flying at low altitude over the area of Naqoura.

The spokesman of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Andrea Tenenti, said they were inspecting the "serious incident."

The 12,000-strong UNIFIL force, which was founded in 1978 and expanded after the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon, closely monitors the border between the two countries.
