A suspected Islamist militant blew himself up in Cairo on Thursday when police attempted to arrest him, reported the state Middle East News Agency.

The man was holed up in an apartment in the working-class area of al-Marg in northern Cairo and tried to escape when police raided the hideout, the agency said, citing an unnamed security source, dpa reported.

"With the noose tightened around him, he blew himself up, injuring a police officer," the source said.

Police found in the suspect's shelter an automatic rifle, a stolen police gun and documents referring to the now-ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, said the source without elaborating.

Egyptian authorities have launched a tough security crackdown on Islamists since the military deposed Muslim Brotherhood leader Morsi in July.

Security forces have since been the target of a series of attacks, which the military-backed government blames on pro-Morsi Islamist insurgents.

The Brotherhood, which condemned Morsi's overthrow as a coup, has repeatedly denied any link to the attacks.
